After another long drive north, I found myself back at the Drax Sports and Social Club near Selby. This time was for the summer edition of Warhorns Festival. Organisers Glyn and Elliot had put on another good line up of bands.
Opening the festival were War Shepherd from Plymouth, who played a good melodic death set with a few clues that they were a newish band. They stayed the whole weekend, enjoying the music, meeting people and supporting the other bands. A lovely bunch of people.
Next on were Heathen Kings who put on a good power metal show.
Following them were Aventail.
After this were Grimgotts and then a short break.
First band after the break were Albion, who put on the show of the day, with their progressive folk. There were parts reminiscent of Jethro Tull, especially with the flute, maybe because the guitarist is one of the current line up.
King of the Dead changed things drastically playing a good set with upbeat tunes and downbeat horror lyrics. They played on a dark stage, with only the vocalist lit. The band were dressed in robes, with masks. This was also the case for their sound engineer and merch.
Thy Kingdom from Finland impressed a lot of us with some awesome melodic death metal.
Zornheym on the other hand, with some out there melodic death, were a bit Marmite, many people walking out after a few songs and the rest having a great time.
Friday’s headliners Gwydion were an odd mix. They hail from Portugal, have a Welsh sounding name and play Viking folk metal. Their set was a good one to end the evening on.
