Grave Lines at the Hope & Ruin

Grave Lines share a guitarist, Oli, with the previous Saturday’s headliner, Sea Bastard, so it was good to see him perform two different sets in a matter of days. Also at the Sea Bastard gig as an audience member (with extra participation) was drummer Sam.

Opening the evening were local instrumental band Ensemble 1 whose technical but seemingly effortless music entertained the early arrivals. They are steadily building themselves a local fanbase.

Headliners Grave Lines were there to showcase their latest album, albeit in a different order to the track listing. Their music is described as heavy gloom, a label that fits nicely. Theirs was solid set, powerful and entertaining, with Oli’s showmanship upstaged by vocalist Jake’s onstage dress and antics.
